The Re homing Animal Telephone Service ( RATS) began as a registered charity in 1984 when a small group of dedicated animal lovers in the Bedford area got together and began a service that put those who needed to rehome an animal in touch with those who wished to adopt via the telephone hence the name Rehoming Animal Telephone Service. From that small beginning we are proud to say that the charity has grown into one of the counties leading animal rescue charities.
Dogs, Cats and later the small mammals began to be fostered by volunteers in their own homes until permanent, vetted homes were found. Fundraising events were organised to pay for urgent vets bills and neutering. The charity was lucky enough to receive an income from some legacies in 2011 that allowed us to purchase the kennels for the Dogs at Hare Street in Hertfordshire and this has helped us to save the lives of many dogs that were due to be put to sleep after running out of time in the pound.
We now re home animals mainly around the Beds, Herts, Luton and Essex areas but we have re homed animals as far away as Bristol.
The cats and small mammals are still fostered in the Bedford area by volunteers and it is our policy never to have a healthy animal put to sleep, simply because no home has been found. Our aim is to re home the animals into caring homes where they are safe for the rest of their lives.
We still rely on fundraising and donations to survive and any support is very welcome.
