On 18 May we marked a special occasion at Beds Growers with our 40th Anniversary Dog Show. This event has become a staple of our May calendar, and this year was no exception, attracting a record-breaking number of visitors, all warmly greeted by our wonderful volunteers, Zoe and Hazel.
Unlike last year's uncertain weather, we enjoyed glorious sunshine throughout both the setup on Friday and the event on Saturday. We came well-prepared with plenty of gazebos for shade and paddling pools to keep our canine guests cool.
A notable highlight this year was the attendance of the High Sheriff of Bedford, who, alongside our Chair, Brian Jones, spent time engaging with members, volunteers, judges, and participants. Our President, Linda Kendrick, and Cat Team Leader, Liz Goodyear, ran lively tombolas, while Cat Team members Helen Crowe and Les Robinson showcased a delightful stall featuring pet items and homemade jams and marmalades.
The kennels stall was a hit, offering three hampers for small, medium and large dogs. We were thrilled to welcome back Camp Beagle and introduce new vendors, including Robert Alexander Jewellery, Doggy Deli Company, Lime Trees Fundraising, Suzanne James Photography Booth and Soggy Doggy Grooming.
This year, we introduced a Have-a-Go Agility area, managed by Jack's Behaviour and Dog Training. It quickly became a favourite, giving dogs a chance to have fun while waiting for their classes. Our refreshments stall, led by Margaret and her dedicated team, was as popular as ever, with homemade cakes and savoury treats that were eagerly devoured by attendees.
A particularly heartwarming moment was when Rex, a dog we rescued last year, took to the ring. Rex's journey from a frail 19.3kg to a robust 53kg is a powerful testament to the transformative care he received from his new owners, Becky and Luke. Rex charmed everyone, showcasing the incredible potential of rescue dogs.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Beds Growers, our sponsors, and guest judges: M&S Biggleswade, StageStruck, Robert Alexander Jewellery, Mae Annie Norman Pet Portraits, Robert Alexander Exterior Interiors, Markey Ltd, Magenta HR, Clelen, Geoff Dobbs, Lisa Livesey, Jane Westrip, Adele Hills, Kath Pitt, Alison Hammond, Jo Bell, Jenny Wiegold and Lime Trees Fundraising.
We were overjoyed to announce that the event raised approximately £2,375, surpassing last year's total by over £650! We are also deeply grateful to all the RATS members and volunteers who ensured the smooth running of the event. Their incredible support made our 40th Anniversary Dog Show a memorable and successful day. Here's to many more successful events in the future!
